Joe Davidson has been the preeminent journalist covering Sacramento sports since 1988. In his chat with Dave, Davidson explores the issues for section high schools trying to practice and play in record-breaking temperatures. "Work within reason and sanity. And don't do practices when it's 105, 110 or 115. It sounds like we're exaggerating but no, that's how hot it's been. And high school coaches, college coaches be flexible. Nighttime practices or early morning because you can't do it when it's 115 despite tradition, schedules and normalcy...because you could have a disaster."

"You gotta draft well and the Kings have had too many clunker drafts. Too many misses. Quincy Douby to Thomas Robinson to Jimmer Fredette. Nick Stauskas. Marvin Bagley. And that's a lot of players. Nobody can say the Kings didn't give them a chance. It's just they don't fit. Good players but it's hard to find the right fit. And the Kings have to have upper management leadership to forecast better and draft better. That's supposed to be their job."

"I think this is the NFL's pound of flesh--they got Gruden...What Gruden did there's no excuse for. I totally understand it....I agree 100 percent with Shannon Sharpe. You wonder what else have they found. This all originated about the Washington Football Team and Dan Snyder. We know the owners are out to protect themselves so if it's 'Hey, look over here. Jon Gruden was a bad guy.' I think he's just one tree in the forest.

FCS National Coach of the Year Troy Taylor on the turnaround at Sacramento State

"My first pass of the year was an interception....I still remember there was an offensive coach who wanted to go with the other quarterback and talk Max (Miller) into it. Max said 'No" and remember him saying 'Troy is our quarterback' and sticking with me and giving me a chance. We ended up having a good season...One of the things I learned from Max was how important it is that your players know you believe in them and how important that is for their confidence and them feeling accepted and valued."
