Howard Cato of Bay Area BMXers

As a 23-year-old, Oakland-native Howard Cato was at a life crossroads. After surviving a shooting that cost him a lung, Cato committed himself to making a difference in the lives of young people with Bay Area BMXers. His vision is to cultivate team spirit and possibly alleviate some of the violence they see or experience on a day-to-day basis. What started off as an East Bay project has spread with team members for other parts of the world with riders competing with the best on the planet. Cato’s message resonated with the folks from Disney who featured Bay Area BMXers on an episode of the “The World According to Jeff.” In his conversation with Dave, Howard speaks out against teenage bullying, the near-death experience and the battles he faces within system to giving young people a better way.

Howard Cato Making a Difference with Bay Area BMXers

"What hurt us bad is that for some reason they put a stop to us going into the juvenile hall and teaching the kids...when the system kind of shuts down because someone's claiming they don't have enough workers....I've been through the system and the reason I wanted to go to the juvenile hall is because I've been there before. Other people gotta understand that when come into these juvenile halls and come into these places, these kids don't want to hearing nothing about no talking because they hear that every day. They want to hear what can you do for them."
